I know that this would not assuage the anger but here's why he's doing it.
There's a possibility that Harry Reid might lose the Nov election but Democrats will maintain a slim majority in the Senate. In case that happens, Durbin and Schumer are the frontrunners for the Senate Majority leader's job. Schumer is not entirely trusted by the unions because he is seen as being too close to Wall Street and the business lobby while Durbin has solid working class/protectionist credentials. This is Schumer's attempt to bolster his image as a friend of the unions.
Obviously, it's morally wrong to rob Peter to pay Paul but no one thinks that the Democrats are the party of saints.

One other thing. Stop picking on the staffing companies.
Without them there is no h-1b and the majority of the people on these boards would not be in USA.
If every company filed an H-1b and adhered to the laws the way they are written; then very few people in IT would be here.
They wouldn't file a quota case unless they had a specific job for you.
As soon as you get on bench then they would revoke the h-1b and send you back home with a plane ticket.
USCIS has caught many frauds recently where people would get h-1b and not be working in IT. They are auto mechanics; working as clerks at motels; working as clerks in liquor stores.
They have figured out that if they want to keep people out then who is bringing them in here. That's right; staffing companies. the established typical american companies do not recruit internationally. If they can stem the tide from people getting here then they can kill H-1b.

It is not a question of whether it affects us or not, It is clear that the NOOSE is getting tighter around legal immigrants. This is happening only because anti-immigrants are spending huge amounts of dollars and putting a lot of pressure on lawmakers. Lawmakers feel this is what their constituents want. While really it is not their constituents, but a small minority of loud-anti-immigrants creating an impression that this is what their constituents need.
Without an opposing voice, they (anti-immigrants) will continue to get encouraged by these small victories and they will pressure lawmakers to bring in more of these restrictive type of bills.
Also, if you carefully look at this bill, the money raised by the additional fees is being spent on the border. How are these two connected?. Money raised from high skiled employers should have been used to give them atleast something in return. How about making the process a little user friendly for the employers. How about using the money for implementing some badly needed reform at USCIS Adjudication. For streamlining, for reducing wait-times, for hiring additional resources.
If we are under the impression that we can be laid-back since it does not affect us, we are wrong.

4. Spread the message about this event to people outside of IV. I talked to at least 20 people who knew nothing about this but are now looking at the advocacy day thread. What they do from there, I leave it to them.
I would also recommend this - Instead of just forwarding the newsletter, I think its better to write a personal note to your friends/colleagues with a link to the IV thread.
This is a good approach. Talk about it. Convince your friends. Keep doing it. Usually you get 1 to 2 % success. Thats how things have been.
It would be great if people actually understand the importance of such things.

What was feared has come true. MI SOS (DMV) has passed the rule denying DLs to newer applicants on Temporary visas. Rules are yet to be made for renewals. But based on statements by SOS Terri Ann Lynd, I wouldn't be surprised if Temporary visa holders are denied DLs too ( since the rule will be based on interpretation of MI law by State Attorney General which says that only permanent residents can be given DL in Michigan)

My priority date is Sept -05, EB3-ROW.
My lawyer says that there is very little chance of me getting greencard within 3 years.

That's right.. But I didn't quite get the context.
First off, IV has made no promises. it's a volunteers' organization that are self-motivated to solve a problem encountered by all that's involved. We try all out to sway the legislation and the public opinions in our favor. Secondly, one of the goals is to raise the public awareness by contacting media, and places with mass infuence. And this thread is about meeting that specific goal.

I would push for everyone who has already not contributed to the $ 5 campaign. Please do so. We need to push the recapture bill.
I am not against deleting this thread. But how is this thread coming in between real work? and how will its closing ensure that real work is done? Maybe I am too naive to understand it.
All I am trying is to get something out for someone to discuss. The hope is that some passive viewers will become active, share a thought. The passive to active viewers who are frustrated can get a channel to think about ideas. At the end, more number of people you have that start contributing, more will the $ 5 campaign succeed. If you have threads only asking for money, that may not pull a lot of people on board. Once people start talking about these things, they become more inclined to participate.
Again, I am not an expert in management skills. So, I have absolutely zero objection to closing this thread. Thank you all for participating.

All i can say is this is bad for Michigan.
What a stupid/sluggish thinking. Their auto industry is already in great trouble. Now, they dont want anybody on temp visa to buy a car. Are they thinking backwards? Even 5 years kid can tell this is bad for their economy.
1) F1's will not be interested to go there. Coz they cannot drive to earn their bread. University's will be effecyed badly.
2) H1's will not take a job where they cannot drive.
