Sorry for the rant, but I felt like I needed to vent to fellow designers. Anyone else have any horror stories?:)
Some people will walk all over you if you let them. Send an email "on the previous job I was paid for 3 hours but my total time spent was actually xxx hours. I can't afford jobs like that, so if you want another job done, you'll have to agree that time spent on phone calls will be billed as well. " And buy a stopwatch.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I do have a pretty good archiving system. I have a folder untitled "freelance" and therein is a folder named after each client and then each project. The guy kind of threw me with the sudden weekend call. You're right about the phone time too. The logic remains problematic. It's like arguing that someone who was just in a car accident increased their chance of getting hurt by driving on the road in the first place. You are indeed blaming the victim.

The Burqua is worn to protect a woman's modesty and so they don't dress provocatively according to the standards of the country where the Burqua is worn.
Your views of what constitutes provocative dress is clearly less extreme than that but your opinion appears to be remarkably similar: "Women shouldn't dress provocatively."
It is wrong to make judgement of anyone based on how they are dressed: A woman (or man) may dress provocatively for a night out because they want to find a partner for the night or into the future. That doesn't mean they are an open door to any scumbag who thinks that they can violate them

No, you are mistaken. What you are talking about here is called "retribution", which is not what justice is supposed to be about. There is more evidence to suggest that the death penalty makes things worse for everyone than when it is not employed. One major example of this might be Canada, which has quite a lot of guns, no capital punishment, and is generally a safer place to be (though I cannot vouch for iJohnHenry's neighborhood ;)).

So i bought this 1.5TB external hard drive and didnt see it required reformatting or i wouldnt of bought it. So now i plug it into my mac, go to disk utilities and it doesnt even pick it up. Its just picking up my normal mac hard drive.

iOS World Frustration Index suddenly dropped to bottom. Numbers finally start to matter again. Once they add Macs, Mac Pros, Mac Minis, refurb resales etc. to the list (when they run iOS) - it will be time to declare victory :D

Shake was pretty much the standard compositing tool for big budget movies when Apple discontinued it. So, a lot of people were using it, funnily, a lot of people still using it, despite being discontinued, it's still a solid product.
I still use Shake and have had no issues.... :D

And I'll just admit I'm not upset cause this doesn't affect me, I don't do early upgrades. Talk to me when they increase the price of the regular upgrade fee.
And honestly, there is such thing called inflation which sadly is happening a lot here. They're costs are going up so it's going to reflect in their prices. Right now they're apparently trying to mitigate it with costs to people who are doing what most people consider a luxury upgrade (being able to break contract early with no penalty and an incentive by having a slighty cheaper phone).
I notice they're not affecting those who are no longer under contract (probably cause they still want to encourage that where as they have less incentive to encourage people to re-sign after a year since they still have them in a contract for a year).
It's called running a business, realizing your prices are going up so you need to reflect that on to the customers (They're not a charity), and deciding where best to do price increases that won't chase off their customers.
And for those pissed off and leaving for Verizon, from what I understand Verizon doesn't even allow early upgrades. So I fail to see if you are upset about early upgrade pricing going up, how Verizon will fix that. Cause with them your "early upgrade" will be the full price of the phone.

Ehh... The Atari Flashback 2 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FAtari-Flashback-2-Plug-Play%2Fdp%2FB00093DHIK&tag=cavesofnarshe-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325) is probably a better solution, especially for those of us who still have standard definition TVs. It comes with about 20 games built in and uses real, miniaturized Atari hardware to the point where you can even modify it to accept old cartridges. (http://www.atarimuseum.com/fb2hacks/) The PCB even has a little space on it that shows where to put the reader.

That is a good question. I haven't thought this through as much as the other way around. If you don't have to circumvent any digital restrictions management to place you in violation of the D.M.C.A, I know people can legally create one personal archival copy from any copies of software programs they legally own. (http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-digital.html) The outcome of several carious cases such as Sony vs. Connectix (http://digital-law-online.info/cases/53PQ2D1705.htm) show that it is quite possible to juxtapose a legally entitled copy onto another platform. It is for these reasons that I believe emulation of Atari 2600 games on a modern P.C. would be legal, if there was only a cartridge reader to take advantage of First Sale Doctrine.
There are too many variables for me to be absolutely certain about the other way around though, since I'm not aware of many precedents going in that direction. There are questions to be raised as to whether you can legally unbundle the ROM files from the App in question though. Only the copyright holder has the right to create a derivative work out of their software so if they're merely considered portions of the Atari's Greatest Hits, you might be out of luck since I doubt your Atari can read iO.S. Apps.
However it could theoretically be considered the same if it's argued that the ROM files constitute computer programs in and of themselves, entitling you to archive them individually. Pendent on how the App works it may also be argued that a .app file on your computer is merely a directory as is any folder or mounted disc volume allowing you to unbundle them and drop the unnecessary bagage, say if you have raw access to a subdirectory of raw ROMfiles. As mentioned above though, if DRM effectively prevents this access or if the ROMfiles are a directly stored as part of the iOS App's executable I doubt much could be done. There might be other unexpected avenues of finding fair use in this case, like how the Betamax Case assumes there was an invitation to use the content in a certain way but I'm hesitant to weigh in on that without prior precedent just due to how hazily Fair Use is applied within the context of the law.
I'm not sure if I can get back to you in a timely manner if ever but now you've piqued my curiosity so it's possible I'll be looking into this in the future...

And who used Shake that its loss makes an impact? Apple could cut Motion and I don't think many would care.
Shake was used for a lot of feature films by a lot of the big studios.
Nuke's now pretty much cleaned up in that space, as pretty much all the big studios (ILM, Weta, Sony, DD, Animal Logic, Cinesite, Image Engine, DNeg, Framestore, MPC, The Mill) have moved over to Nuke.
The problem with "really" pro apps like Nuke/Shake (and to a smaller extent FCP) is that they are used in part of a pipeline. The customer knows what they want, and they want flexibility, customisability, programmability, and they want software to work the way they do.
Apple doesn't really work like that - with the Pro apps they're slightly different, but in general their attitude is "this is what you need, do it this way. It'll be released soon and it will be awesome."

Since I just got my new PMG5 yesterday, what is a good program (free or otherwise) for making backups of DVD's (legally of course)? I have quite a collection and ones that I use a lot I want to make an extra copy of. I am looking for a program that will allow me to make an exact copy of the DVD, as if I were playing my original copy.
Side Note: Since my new PM has a 8x Superdrive, do I NEED to use the 8x Apple DVD-R's, or can I use a different brand (or speed)? I remember back when I used to use faster CDR's they didn't always work good...is this still true? Thanks!
Without a doubt, "SuperDuper!" is one of the best backup programs I've used. It won't make a DVD that is immediately useable on any old DVD player, but it will save all the information easily on a disk image should you need to make one (since you're not actually watching these anyway).
